Welcome

At Worcester Local First, where we encourage consumers to "think local first" when buying goods and services, we view the future of Worcester as positive and exciting. As we all know, Worcester has a long tradition of being at the heart of our region, both economically and culturally. The Heart of the Commonwealth boasts several fine colleges, a lively political climate, an ethnically diverse population, many world-class cultural institutions, and several business- and family-friendly neighborhoods.

We have myriad dynamic assets, and near the top of this list are the thousands of locally owned, independent businesses. In addition to the many long-time businesses that we have come to know and love, Worcester has encouraged and witnessed an upsurge in the birth of new entrepreneurial ventures based here.

Next Worcester Local First Networking Party: Wed., May 21, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Dzian Art Gallery

Scenes from recent Worcester Local First networking parties, at Percy's TV & Appliance, The Beechwood Hotel & Conference Center, and Tush Denim Boutique.

Please be our guest on Wednesday, May 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Dzian Art Gallery, 65 Water St., for the latest in a regular series of Worcester Local First Networking Parties. Free wine tastings and hors d'oeuvres will be served.

This is much more than a chance to exchange business cards and pleasantries. Instead, it is a rare, unique opportunity to meet, talk and even make arrangements to partner or collaborate with your peer owners and operators of Worcester's locally owned, independent businesses in ways that make money for each of you.

Own and operate a retail store? See another owner/operator across the room? He or she runs a hospitality  business. Don't think you have much in common? Strike up a conversation and watch how fast the innovative, entrepreneurial and profitable ideas start flowing fast and furious.

Struggling to make ends meet? Seek the generous and free advice and support of successful business owners/operators who are more than willing and able to coach and guide you.

Watching most if not all of any new profits go up the chimney in ever-rising energy costs? Learn from other owners/operators who have converted to renewable, clean, sustainable and affordable forms of energy and, in many cases, received grants and/or low-cost financing to make the switch.

Tired of losing customers or clients to the chains and franchises? Join Worcester Local First and help us encourage retail consumers and businesses to "think local first" when buying goods and services.

Your  tax-deductible membership fee and donation to Worcester Local First helps ensure that an average of 68 cents of each $1 spent by consumers stays in the Worcester community, versus an average of only 43 cents of each $1 spent at chains and franchises.

Congratulations and thanks to all of you who have joined Worcester Local First. You're furthering the campaign to encourage Worcester consumers to "think local first" when they buy goods and services and, as a result, to keep a lot more of their hard-earned money in the local economy.

Becoming a Worcester Local First member, is an important first step to achieving this sustainable-business goal. Advertising in Worcester Local First's 2008-2009 Business Directory, is the next logical step to advance this mission.

Our goal is to put this handy, attractive, easy-to-use guide in the hands of 30,000 Worcester retail and business consumers. They will be able to use the 2008-2009 Business Directory to quickly identify and locate Worcester businesses that are locally owned and independent.

The cost per impression: Less than one cent!

Studies show that an average of 68 cents of every $1 spent at a locally owned, independent business stays in the local economy. However, only 43 cents of each $1 spent at chains and franchises does likewise.

Ad deadline: June 1. Publication date: August 1.
