As we all know, Worcester has a long tradition of being at the heart of our region, both economically and culturally. The Heart of the Commonwealth boasts several fine colleges, a lively political climate, an ethnically diverse population, many world-class cultural institutions, and several business- and family-friendly neighborhoods. We have myriad dynamic assets. Near the top of this list, are the thousands of locally owned, independent businesses. In addition to the many long-time businesses that we have come to know and love, Worcester has encouraged and witnessed an upsurge in the birth of new entrepreneurial ventures based here. Both old and new, our locally owned, independent businesses make numerous, important contributions to Worcester every day. This goes beyond the significant role they play in our local economy because, among other things, they contribute to local charities, support community events, and are critical to the unique character of Worcester. Worcester is fortunate to have several fine business districts that help enrich the fabric of our economic life. Downtown Worcester is experiencing a rebirth as businesses locate here and new developments such as the $30-million, 2,200-seat Performing Arts Center are in the works. Worcester is home to a lively, largely entrepreneurial restaurant district along Shrewsbury Street. A few blocks away, a burgeoning neighborhood known as the Canal District is alive with development and an influx of new residents. Yes, Worcester's future looks bright. Clearly, we are on the verge of a regional renaissance. All that's needed is a local investment at the individual level, one based on a commitment to "think local first" and support our own, home-grown business community.
